The NFL is back!

Los Angeles Rams Stadium Wall Art

If you’re not a massive NFL fan, then it may have escaped your notice that the new season is about to kick off on 8th September.  Of course, if you’re the type of person whose home is adorned with NFL memorabilia or custom wall art featuring players, you’re no doubt already on countdown.

Here in the UK, a country known world-wide for its love of football teams such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, it can be hard to understand the fascination with this American version of football.  Played on a rectangular pitch, the object of the game is of course to score more than your opponent – but that’s arguably where the similarities end.  With the body pads, shiny helmets and frequent breaks in play this can feel like a ridiculously over-protective sport or rugby on steroids.

Here at Marmalade Art we’re huge American Football fans, but for those unsure what all the fuss is about, we’ve pulled together a handy guide to help you get the most out of this new season.

What’s the objective?

Unlike UK football, the objective isn’t to score goals. Instead, each team must try to get the football (in this case an oval shaped ball, rather than a round one) into the opponent’s end zone.

Various points are awarded if the ball goes into the end zone, depending on how the ball is played.  For example, the infamous touchdown is worth six points, and is achieved when a portion of the ball (rather than the whole ball) crosses the goal line whilst in the possession of an offensive player.

Alternatively, a player could score three points with a field goal.  This is where the ball is kicked between the two goal posts and over the cross bar.

How long is a game?

Whilst our traditional football has very set time limits (i.e. two halves of 45 minutes each with some extra time added), American football is a little different.

There are strict times associated with the actual playing of the game – specifically, a match is split into quarters, with each quarter being 15 minutes.  There is then a half time break between the second and third quarters. However, unlike in football, the clock is not always running.  There are pauses for timeouts and between certain set plays.

In reality, each 15 minute quarter will take approximately 40 minutes of real time to complete.  In fact, the longest recorded game was 7 hours and 40 minutes and was played on 20th December 1962.

The best thing you can do …

The best way to get involved in American football is to start watching it.  Get stuck into a game, order some pizza, grab a beer and some snacks and embrace all things American.
