Preparation is the key to success

As with all home improvements, the key to success is in the preparation. Take time to prepare your walls carefully, resolving imperfections at this point will always provide for a better finish that you and others will enjoy for many years to come.

It is important to completely remove any debris, old paper (including the backing) from the wall surface in preparation to installing your new wall mural.  The wall should also be free of all contaminants such as dirt, mildew, dust, oil, grease, nails screws etc and be a uniform colour.

Any screws or nails should be removed or flattened and any holes or cracks in the wall should be filled and sanded smooth.

For Porous Surfaces

Ensure all surfaces are dry.  Old plaster must be stable and free of mould.  New plaster should be completely dry.

Non-porous surfaces

Lightly sand the walls to provide a key, then dust the wall with a clean brush. Wash the walls and allow them to dry. Prime the wall with a PVA primer allowing to dry thoroughly before starting to install your wall mural.

Let’s Get Started

When your happy that your walls are clean, dry and prepared correctly. Remove all unnecessary objects from the working area.

Take time to familiarise yourself with the installation instructions and make a working plan. This will make your work easier and minimise the risk of mistakes or accidents producing results to be proud of.

With all tools easily at hand let’s get started…

Prepare your paper

Your mural is printed on 45 cm wide strips that are helpfully numbered on each strip in the order to be hung. Finding the number on the strip, lay out in numerical order (number 1 on top).

You are now ready to install.

Remember – we have made allowances for trimming top and bottom to compensate for uneven walls.

Place the first panel

Apply your pre mixed wallpaper adhesive directly to the wall, making sure to have a gone beyond the width of the paper, to avoid pasting the face of the previous panel. Apply evenly, leaving no dry misses and paying particular attention to all corners, skirting, ceiling lines and electric points.

Always isolate any electrical points that you are working near before installation. If in any doubt consult a qualified electrical engineer who will be able to assist you.

Hang the first length, working from top to bottom, allowing the paper to fall naturally.

Working first vertically and then horizontally smooth over with a soft brush to ensure no air bubbles remain trapped underneath.

Check carefully that you have followed your plumb line for correct alignment, checking in key image areas (eye level and focal points) before trimming top and bottom.

If necessary to achieve a good alignment, carefully pull back or remove and reposition your mural and proceed as above.

Perfect your panels

For Standard, Premium & Textured Papers

To hang your custom wallpaper just hang the panels from edge to edge, butting together with no overlap.

Match the image at the join and adjust slightly until the design completely matches.

Smooth the paper with a soft brush first vertically then horizontally.

When you are completely happy with the effect you are ready to trim the excess from the top, bottom and any edges for a professional finish using a knife and straight edge.

Checking the entire length of the joint is matched and not overlapped, gently using the seam roller ensure the joins are well bonded.

Wipe away any excess paste from the face of the paper, skirting’s, ceilings and electrical points with a dry or slightly dampened clean sponge.

Repeat to complete

Continue until all panels are hung and your mural is complete using the method described above.

Carefully remove any adhesive or residue with clean warm water and a sponge.

Allow to dry thoroughly before carrying out any further works on or in close proximity to your new mural.

Paste the wall

Apply the paste directly to the wall, allowing 10cm overlap on the width to avoid pasting the face of the wallpaper when pasting the next drop.

Take particular care to paste evenly without leaving misses especially around skirtings, corners and all edges.

Slightly dampen each piece of paper as you require and leave to soak for 10 minutes.

When the 10 minutes are nearly up. Paste the wall again then hang the first piece using a plumb line or spirit level.

Follow the instructions above. Using a soft brush or a squeeze to smooth it down, avoiding any air bubbles to ensure a perfect finish.

Always isolate any electrical points that you are working near before proceeding with installation. If in any doubt consult a qualified electrical engineer who will be able to assist you.

Trim away the excess paper from the top, bottom and any edges using a straight edge and a sharp knife.

Overlap the wallpaper

Overlap the edges and allow the wall mural to fall naturally and avoid it stretching.

Your paper is printed with a 20mm overlap, using the black crop marks at the top and the bottom carefully guide the paper into position at the join making sure it is completely matched.

Trim away the excess paper from the top, bottom and any edges using a straight edge and a sharp knife.

Using a sharp knife and a straight edge, pressing firmly with enough pressure to cut through both pieces, carefully cut down the centre of the overlap. The excess top strip should drop away as you cut through the join.

Remove the excess underlap

Gently peel the right hand paper back and remove the unwanted excess strip underneath the panel (see diagram).

Using more paste if required.

Use a seam roller to press the edges down and clean any excess paste from the joins with a damp clean sponge immediately.

Repeat to complete

Continue until all panels are hung and your mural is complete using the method described above.

Carefully remove any adhesive or residue with clean warm water and a sponge.

Allow to dry thoroughly before carrying out any further works on or in close proximity to your new mural.
